A board game about brewing beer

BREWMASTER GAME
If you appreciate good beer, you'll love BrewMaster: The Craft Beer Game.
Using mechanics similar to rummy, players combine cards to brew six beer styles including ale, stout and Belgian. In doing so players will use some of the 90 cards representing real beer ingredients.

After brewing beer players place chips (representing crowds) onto the laminatedgame board. As the game continues players try to brew better beer and draw crowds away from other players.
The game is influenced heavily by event cards, which players draw after brewing beer. The event deck represents some of the real triumphs and tragedies that have taken place in the microbrewery world. Watch out for the green scrubie card, which will cause you to lose a turn because you have to take apart your heat exchanger to find it. The event deck also contains beer festivals and the dreaded Big Breweries card.
The player with the most beer festival trophies and crowd markers wins the game. The game is great for two to five players and generally takes less than an hour to play.

No beer knowledge is necessary, as this is not a trivia or drinking game. Indeed it is the perfect game for settings involving beer and non-beer fans alike.
As brewers, beer fans and others have noted, the game captures the fun and excitement of brewing. It makes the perfect gift for yourself or the beer lover in your life!
COMPONENTS
* Official rulebook
* 75 ingredient cards
* 15 event cards
* One die
* An 11" x 17" laminated game board
* 40 crowd chips
* 7 beer festival trophies

Home of an Original Chipotle Stout

Stumblefoot Brewing Co. is setting out to make the best beer we can using the finest ingredients available. We want our beer to be an artisan experience of local flavor.

Stumblefoot Brewery is the latest new brewery in San Diego's North County located in San Marcos, CA. Our brewery was named as one the "Rookies of the Year" by UT San Diego's Peter Rowe in SD International Beer Fest: six lessons article and "took medals in their first year, marking them as up-and-comers, well worth keeping an eye on".  Keep an eye on us and we will keep a cold beer for you.

As we created this project and learned how to put our brewery together the name Stumblefoot came to us. I have been asked many times how and where I came up with the name for our brewery so I decided to come up with a definition that incorporates the essence of our learning experience:

Stumblefoot – \’stəm • bəl • fut\ (noun)
1) The art and science of gaining new knowledge through the happenstance of interesting encounters. Fortune favors the prepared.

Getting to Know Your Brewery

The original manufacturing facility known as San Diego Brewing Company® opened in 1896 with much fanfare. A. E. Horton, the father of San Diego, referred to the Brewery as the most important industrial enterprise since he founded the town. It was the largest manufacturing enterprise in the county.

The brew house held a 25 horse power engine which operated the elevator, barley mill, mash tun and other apparatus. The mash tun could easily give shelter to twenty five men! The brewery’s fermenting cellar was filled with great tanks full of amber fluid, foaming and sparkling. The capacity of the plant was 75,000 barrels.

San Diego Brewing Company® delivered their product to all parts of the city and county in bottles or in barrels. Their beers were said to “sparkle like nectar”. Sadly the company was removed from 32nd Street by the Navy in 1942 and replaced by a base for the Pacific Fleet.
Today the new San Diego Brewing Company® hopes to carry on the tradition that was started so long ago. Along with an assortment of fresh beers brewed on the premises, San Diego Brewing Company® offers up to fifty taps of beer every day, providing a brew to satisfy each and everyone.

Character Building At Its Best

We like beer. And word on the street is you do too. So you’ve been petitioning with your boss for beer breaks instead of smoke breaks, and trying to get a tap handle installed in the lunch room. There’s nothing wrong with that. That’s thinking outside the box right?

Here at Rough Draft, we like to reward that forward thinking with handcrafted beers that are as unique in character as those who drink it. We favor style over perfection and take joy in sharing our great-tasting creations with those who simply love to try new beer.

The beers that prove to be winners in our tasting room will be the ones we put into distribution.

So stop by frequently, taste each of our new drafts, and tell us what you think.

Pizza Port
Tasty Grub and Grog

Back in March of 1987 Gina and Vince Marsaglia, a pair of siblings in their 20′s, bought a struggling pizza place in the sleepy coastal town of Solana Beach, just north of San Diego. From a funky storefront on the famous Pacific Coast Highway the duo ran the “Pizza Port” with a classic menu of pizza and chicken wings to which they added their own “San Diego” twist.

The Original Pizza Port in Solana Beach

The parking was limited and the building crowded with simple hand-built picnic tables and a hodge-podge décor of surf-related paraphernalia almost at odds with the sophisticated flavors of the food. But word spread quickly and it wasn’t long before Pizza Port was a local favorite.

Early on Vince took advantage of free space in the restaurant’s storage area to dabble with home brewing. The hobby took off and he was eventually brewing more than could reasonably be consumed at home. So at the urging of friends and fans, the Vince and Gina decided to go into the brewpub business. Pizza Port offered its first craft-brewed beers to patrons in 1992.

Embracing the same “flavor-driven” principles that had made the pizza menu so popular, Pizza Port quickly gained a reputation in San Diego’s nascent craft beer scene. In 1997 the company opened a second location a few miles north of Solana Beach in Carlsbad, and a third in 2003 in San Clemente. The same year San Clemente opened (as well as the year after), the original location in Solana Beach won Great American Beer Festival “Small Brewpub of the Year”.

The Pizza Port family’s reputation for great foods and craft beer continued to grow, making them landmarks not just for Southern Californians, but for beer lovers from around the world. In 2008 they opened a premium bottle shop with more that 600 craft beers adjacent to the Carlsbad locations, and by the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the Pizza Ports were a brewing dynasty. In 2009 the Pizza Ports won a staggering 9 medals at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival and Pizza Port Carlsbad was named “Large Brewpub of the Year”.

Not content to rest on past successes, Gina and Vince opened a forth Pizza Port in Ocean Beach in May of 2010.

Like the first in Solana Beach and all the Pizza Ports after it, it is just blocks from the beach and combines signature foods and handcrafted beers with the unique atmosphere of the beach town that surrounds it.

More significantly, as the first location within the city of San Diego itself, the new brewpub finally put Pizza Port’s unique foods and handcrafted beers within minutes of millions. And even though it came nearly a quarter century after the original, the Ocean Beach Pizza Port still holds to the same rule as all others: “Good Food and Good Beer Bring Good Cheer!” Cheers!

HISTORY

My Grandfather as a child moved to Carlsbad in the 1920's. His dad & family were hired to help build the Rail Road. Living in a train car the family of the workers would follow on the track as it was laid.   My Grandfather was born in that train car "On the Tracks" in a small town in Oklahoma. When the job was done, the family was granted citizenship and a train ticket to any place they wanted to go.

 They picked a small farm community in northern San Diego County. Carlsbad has changed a lot in the last 100 years or so. The flower fields that my Great-Grandfather spent his career tending to are still there; just a bit smaller than it once was. My Grandmother would hear the train whistle echoing on the farm, and dream of moving far away from the dirt and a hard life in New Mexico. During WWII she along with her brothers and sisters all moved to Carlsbad and Oceanside.

 My Mom's cousins all remember the day Carlsbad High school opened and the buses came to Oceanside to pick up the Carlsbad kids for the grand opening ceremony.   My Dad’s family settled in Escondido, we try to not hold it agents them, 5 generations ago.   The sacrifices our family has made, so that we can follow our dreams and continue to live in this community, have been great.

 So Why Craft Beer?
 After spending time in London, after high school, Greg (head brewer) fell in love with the Pub life and the beers of England and Scotland. Good quality beer with a long history and tradition.   After Finishing his B.A. in anthropology from Whittier College he moved home and decided to start this adventurer, with a lot of sport from family. He brews with a lot of different spices and plays with flavor combinations.   It is an exciting time for craft beer and San Diego & we are happy to now be a part of it. Good Beer made with love and passion in our hometown.

 Soon we plan to step up production and expand to a bigger system, but never lose sight of our goal of always providing the best in hand-crafted beer.   Our tap room is open and we have a few places here in North County serving our craft on tap.

 Nicole our sometimes brewer graduated from Whittier College with her B.A. in communications and theatre arts. She works with, and is a member of, IATSE 122 in San Diego. When not working as a stage hand she is at the brewery, being a very good sister. Greg had to teach her how to appreciative the world of craft, she continues to develop her brewing style.

Here on the West Coast, San Diego is considered by many to be THE hot spot for microbrews. It is here, that Mother Earth Brew Co. was born. Founded in 2008 by three passionate brewers, Mother Earth Brew Co. had one goal; to create distinguished, hand crafted beers that stimulate sensory conversation and a desire for the next sip. From a modest garage, to a 2000 plus sq. foot facility, Mother Earth Brew Co. maintains our original goal – to challenge even the most discriminating beer drinker by creating complex, pallet-pleasing beers, and to promote the art and science of craft beer making.

In early 2010, Mother Earth Brew Co. launched a unique brewing supply store and tasting room in beautiful Vista, CA. Just a half mile from the 78 freeway, off Sycamore exit, and just minutes from the I-5, Mother Earth Brew Co. is right in the middle of the “North County Beer Triangle” in North San Diego County.

Our Retail Store carries a wide variety of homebrew supplies to meet all your brewing needs: Over 60 bulk grains, a huge selection of Hop varieties, and dozens of yeast strains from industry leaders White Labs, Wyeast and Fermentis. We also carry a full selection of flavoring adjuncts and additives, extracts, brewing equipment, and cleaning supplies:everything you need in one convenient location! Located in Vista, off Sycamore exit, we are your only one-stop-shop for homebrew supplies on the 78 corridor. Whether you are a brewing novice, or seasoned vet, our staff is ready to help you get fermenting today!

Mission Brewery

Located at 1441 L Street, San Diego Ca 92101 (corner of 14th & L)

Hours: Mon – Saturday 12-8, Sun 12-5. Open earlier if there is a Padre game.

Originally located less than a mile from the very hill where Friar Junipero Serra and his scurvy-ridden crew drove their stake into the ground, Mission Brewery was born in those heady first days of the 20th century.

And then prohibition shut it down. Re-established in 2007, we are honored to say that four months and four beers in, Mission was awarded two national medals at the Great American Beer Festival. Fast forward to 2010 our plunder of precious beer medals has gown considerably. Three Gold, three Silver and two Bronze medals now fill our bounty. A dream come true for long-time die-hard home brewers. From modest beginnings to a state of the art custom made brewery in the historic Wonderbread building just east of San Diego’s baseball stadium Petco Park at 1441 L. St (corner of 14th & L) . We are brewing beer and our tasting bar is now open to the public. There’s nothing more enjoyable than a pint while watching the beer you’re drinking being made a few feet from where you’re sitting.

No catchy gimmicks. No national campaigns. Just great handcrafted beer made in San Diego!

“Everybody needs a little latitude”

The 33rd parallel runs smack dab through the heart of San Diego County — what many refer to as the current capital of craft beer — and our brewery sits just a hair north of the line.

Interestingly, Latitude 33 isn’t just the current world headquarters for beer, half a world away, it’s also the place where beer was invented. A quick check of the history books will also show the 33rd parallel played host to some of the world’s most significant events. Great civilizations have risen and fallen (and risen again) upon it. Silk roads and superhighways traverse it. Mythical creatures, ancient gods, biblical figures, sultans, kings, emperors, pirates, and explorers have all called it home. Some even believe the line has mystical significance.
Regardless of the people and events, however, Latitude 33 is always synonymous with “Adventure” — which is also our brewing philosophy. We’re on an exploration that involves taking a few risks, trying new things and injecting a little of the unexpected into the world of craft beer. If you’re up for it, we’d like to invite you to come along. Just meet us at Latitude 33.

BEER PIONEERS

It all started back in the mid 1980s, when our fearless founders, Chris Cramer and Matt Rattner, graduated from college and moved to San Diego, Chris’ hometown. They set up shop in an apartment on Mission Beach, armed with newly minted degrees, an entrepreneurial spirit, and an appreciation for beer. Inspired by a brewpub Chris came upon while traveling through Australia, they wanted to open a microbrewery and reintroduce locally brewed handcrafted beer to San Diego, a concept banned by Prohibition in the 1930s.

But there’s a fine line between a good idea and a crazy one. They needed to consult an authority on the subject. Enter Karl. As in Karl M. Strauss, Chris’ cousin and world renowned master brewer of over 50 years. He not only endorsed their idea, but he also lent his expertise to the venture. With “Uncle Karl” on board, they went about crunching numbers, working out logistics, and tasting different beers (strictly for research purposes, of course).

If We Brew It, Will They Come?
After a year of writing IOUs to friends and family, overcoming archaic liquor laws, and nailing down beer recipes, the clock struck beer-thirty. On February 1st, 1989, the night before Chris and Matt opened the doors of the first new brewpub in the city of San Diego in over 50 years, they wondered: “Will people come?”

On opening day, locals lined up around the block on Columbia Street downtown to try the three original beers: Karl Strauss Amber Lager (Karl’s favorite), Gaslamp Gold, and Downtown after Dark. For most people, it was the first time they had ever tasted fresh beer. Not only did Chris and Matt run out of beer within weeks, but soon requests were flowing in from local bars and restaurants who wanted to serve Karl Strauss beer. The boys were on to something big.

Employing the trusty “learn as you go” technique, Chris and Matt kept up with demand by quadrupling the 10 barrel brew system at the brewpub. They also set up a small distribution brewery in a nearby industrial park, which they outgrew in a matter of months. In 1996, they bought a greenhouse on Santa Fe Street in Pacific Beach and converted it into the main brewery we call home today.

Share the Beer
A lot has changed since those early days. We now brew over 30 beers a year, including 6 core beers and a host of specialty beers, and seasonals. Our distribution has expanded to include over 2,500 bars, restaurants, liquor stores, and grocery stores throughout Southern California. And we’ve opened five more Brewery Restaurants in San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the commitment to brew fresh, quality beer that our first Brew Master instilled in us. Karl’s love of life, respect for others, and passion for handcrafted beer serves as the foundation of our company to this day.

Hess Brewing is four guys, a gal and a warehouse space, for now:

Mike Hess, is founder and Proprietor of Hess Brewing. As a homebrewer, he started brewing 5 gallon batches back in ‘95, then moved up to 10 and finally spent a half dozen years on a 20 gallon brewery. He is the designer of our current brewhouse, the man behind the recipe formulations and is our CBO (Chief Brewing Officer).

Michael Skubic is our tasting room manager and all around beer wrangler. He has poured more beer at Hess than anyone else and you will find him during our open hours behind the bar. Knowledgeable about beers, especially ours, he is also the social media guru for Hess Brewing keeping the word up to date on our Blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Court Patton is our CAD (Chief Art Dude). If it has the Hess brand (ads to stickers, posters to labels) Court drew it and designed it. Beer lover and beer drinker See more of his work here. He is also responsible for Quichrbichn, the next big thing in outer wear.

Lynda Hess is our CBC (Chief Bean Counter). She’s holds an MBA from Thunderbird, and is our Quickbooks wizard. She keeps Mike on track and is the woman behind the man. She's also a triathlete, mother of three and speaks fluent Mandarin. Nee how ma?

Greg Hess is not only in charge of Sales and Distribution, but also our CBD (Chief Bird Dog). Master mechanic, MacGyver extraordinaire. If it’s broke, Greg can fix it; if it needs installing or fabricating, he can make it.

The Warehouse…well, it’s our brewery and tasting room. Tip an honest pint at our handmade wood and concrete bar, but notice no chairs! (and unfortunately no darts, shuffleboard or pool) otherwise we'd be an actual bar and we wouldn't want that…wait, actually we would, but the Alcohol and Beverage Commission wouldn’t. It’s 800 ft2 of happiness!

Our Company
A small company with big ideas.

Mike and Lisa Hinkley took their interest in the craft beer industry to a new level in 2002 when they founded Green Flash Brewing Company. Former pub owners, Mike and Lisa jumped into brewing, and in 2004 renowned brewmaster Chuck Silva joined the team.

With Chuck on board we began brewing premium style beers, modern twists on traditional styles, and our beers began to develop a following. Cutting edge brews, Green Flash Brewing Company’s beers don’t fit traditional guidelines, instead we let our hybrid, benchmark beers blaze their own trail.
Located in San Diego, CA, we specialize in brewing assertive and distinctive beers, such as our West Coast I.P.A.: an award-winning beer whose wide acceptance has helped define a category. We also brew seasonal, collaborative and barrel-aged beers.

Our award-winning beers are on draft and bottled and are available throughout the United States in bars, restaurants and retail outlets.

Our People
A small team of people making great beer.

Every person on our team contributes to the success our beers, and we rely on them to continue to bring a new, fresh approach to brewing beer. Here’s to the team that brews, bottles, markets, sells, and delivers the brews of Green Flash Brewing Company.
